Over/Under: Georgia Tech, Power Rankings and Superfan Shirts

We attempt to beat the midweek blues with a game of Over Under.

This weekend the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets come to campus with Paul Johnson's new triple option offense. Last week, the Ramblin' Wreck tallied 349 yards rushing in a 41-14 win against Jacksonville State.

Over/Under - 250 yards on the ground for Georgia Tech this weekend.

Brian: Slightly over. I expect Georgia Tech to run for about 275 yards this weekend and only grab about 75-100 in the air. Not to mention the fact that Paul Johnson likes to go for it on fourth down, creating more opportunities to accumulate yards.

Jeff: Last year Paul Johnson's Navy team averaged 348.8 rushing yards per game. Georgia Tech is going to put up similar numbers this year even though they might not win as many games as Navy did last year. But, our run defense is the strength of our team and that is well-known throughout the conference so I'll expect to see a little more play-action from Georgia Tech and they'll go under 250 rushing yards.

Over/Under 80 other college football Kent State opponents would've yielded a larger crowd than BC did last weekend drawing a mere 10,788

Jeff: Over. Way over. Obviously every team from the MAC draws bigger crowds for Kent State, any team from the Big Ten, Big XII, or SEC would've traveled more fans. Any team from the PAC-10 would've drawn more locals than BC. Thats already 46 teams. Every team in the ACC except Duke would've traveled more fans and/or drawn more local support. In the Big East, WVU, Pitt, Louisville, Rutgers, UConn, and Syracuse all would've traveled better because they probably have more local Alum. Then, probably most WAC, MWC, and other division 1-A schools would've somehow drawn a crowd of more than 10,000.

Brian: I'm not dignifying this question with an answer. It's not really BC's fault this game was poorly attended. Kent State didn't hold up their end of the bargain, and there would have been a lot more fans in the stadium had the game been played in Dix Stadium. Not to mention the game was hardly marketed at all. Plus, most of these BCS schools from the Big Ten, Big XII or SEC don't even know what it's like to go to an away football game against a (historically bad) MAC team. These larger schools play all of their out of conference games against non-BCS conference opponents at home (see: Ohio State playing every other JV team in the state of Ohio in the Horseshoe). So instead of answering this question, I'll switch it up and say over/under two more years of financial viability for the Patriot Bowl in Cleveland. Besides, what's patriotic about Cleveland? Nothing.

Jeff: It seems the Kent State AD wants to keep trying so I'll go over 2 years. But, the question didn't blame BC. If USC had come to Cleveland the stadium would've been a lot closer to full than empty and it would've been with a lot of KSU fans knowing that their team will lose. BC, unfortunately, is a team that KSU fans knew they would not beat, yet were not intrigued by the matchup enough to come out and see the loss because we don't have a big name head coach, a Heisman candidate, or great college football tradition. Other teams who also fit into these categories, might've traveled more fans themselves to help fill seats.

Over/Under - Boston College ranked #7 of 12 in ESPN.com's HD's ACC power rankings (behind - surprise, surprise - Maryland, who beat Delaware by 7 points).

Brian: I am going under. Boston College is much better than Maryland, who struggled against a Joe Flacco-less Delaware. Georgia Tech beat up on Jacksonville State and is ranked #3? Florida State didn't even play! Miami has a quarterback controversy. Clemson played with no heart.

Sure, we didn't wow anyone with our offense in Week 1, but why should we empty the Steve Logan playbook when we controlled the game throughout? We still have some plays up our sleeves.

Jeff: We might never wow anyone with our offense this year but clearly we're both going under on this one. Georgia Tech somehow ranks #3 on this list but fortunately ACC play begins for us Saturday and by the end of the game either Boston or Georgia Tech will have made a statement.

Over/Under - 200 passing yards for Matt Ryan in his pro debut at home against the Lions.

Jeff: Forever the Matt Ryan optimist I am going over!

Brian: Yeah, the Detroit Lions aren't really known for their defense. While I expect Matt to make some mistakes and maybe the touchdown to interception ratio won't be flashy, I do expect him to throw for more than 200 yards. So I will begrudingly agree with you. Over.

Boston College's mens soccer team was upset this past weekend 1-0 by Providence. Next up for the Eagles, they have games Friday and Sunday against Villanova and St. John's in the adidas-Brown Classic in Providence.

Over/Under - One and a half victories for the men this weekend.

Brian: I am going over. I'll predict that the Eagles rebound after a loss to the Friars to win the adidas-Brown Classic. While St. John's has historically been a strong team in the Big East, I don't see the Eagles being tripped up by either the Red Storm or the Wildcats.

Jeff: The Eagles are the defending conference champs! Of course they'll bounce back. Over.

Last one, Over/Under - Wearing a BC Superfan shirt 5 years after you've graduated.

Jeff: Over (with a clause). Here is my rule on Superfan shirts. Anyone can wear them except for parents. If you are going to the game with your children, whether your children are toddlers or students or anything in between, you cannot wear a Superfan shirt. Now, lets say you are 35 and on a guys weekend in Boston to go to the game and you have a few kids at home with your wife- you can wear a Superfan shirt as long as your kids are not with you. If you just graduated but have kids already and you bring them to the games, no more Superfan shirt for you.

Brian: Under. This is an easy one. One or two years after graduation, fine. Three or four years after graduation, you're pushing it. Past four years, frame that sucker and hang it in your living room. If you really insist on wearing a Superfan shirt four years after you've graduated, wear the Alumni Superfan shirt. Even though this is an abomination to BC Eagles gear everywhere, at least you'll be wearing the same color as your classmates. (Seriously though, could they have designed a more hideous Alumni Superfan shirt?! I'm convinced they took an eagle logo from the Microsoft Word clip-art gallery and pasted it on the front of that t-shirt). Everyone knows alumni wear maroon. So MAX four years after graduation, your options are: maroon t-shirt, football jersey, Alumni Superfan shirt (guhh!), or a BC polo shirt. If you are feeling a little more mature in your fandom, throw on the polo and matching whale pants and sit down the entire game.

Jeff: Brian, do the University and the Athletic Department a service and stop telling people to wear maroon when they are launching a campaign to wear gold. Anyone going to the game this weekend, please wear your superfan shirt or other gold BC shirt or yellow/gold polo. Just give this initiative a chance. Please.

Brian: I wore a maroon Boston College t-shirt and a maroon BC ballcap this past weekend, so I'm sticking with what works, Jeff. It's science.

Let's class this place up a little bit. I'll be at my tailgate wearing my BC bowtie. Stop by and say hello.

You're both right about the superfan shirts...in a way. For whatever reason, the media loves the superfan shirts. They've become synonymous with BC. The BC marketing dept. is trying to get folks to get with the program and at least wear gold if not a superfan shirt. Now, that being said, the actual undergrad superfan shirts should be a thing of the past. Especially the god awful slogans on the back.

And Brian was right--the alumni superfan shirt is painfully ugly. Don't wear that, either.

The solution? Easy.

Sport a Grid Iron Club Superfan shirt. I found a pic of one being sported by one of our older Eagles from the BC site here that I cut:

They go for around $15 bucks if memory serves. Plus, as a Grid Iron Club member, you're a booster for the team. Win/Win.

BC MIke please post link again so we can read it. I am undecided on gear to wear this year, so this could sway my decision.

Actually, if you triple click part of the link, the entire link is highlighted + then you can cut and paste.

Raj--here's a link to the Grid Iron club itself.

to give soccer a little more cred- we had an amazing season last year, and lost to a UMASS team that made a good run in the tourney. You'll see us lose to teams, that we may be better that. Unfortunately scoring opportunities are few and far between in soccer, and while we dominated possession against providence, they got up on us early. I like our chances in the tourney this weekend, both teams gave us little trouble in the Big East, and we have recruited much better since our move to the ACC. Example our U-21 US team players and a goalie named Chris Brown. GO EAGLES- G-tech isn't the only "football" this weekend.

I spent the money on the stupid "Gold Rush" shirt, you better believe I'm wearing it Saturday.

Stick with whatever works. If the Eagles keep winning, it's all good.
