Toss Up: Offseason Football Musings, Outdoor Hockey and Rice's Draft Stock

Jeff and I tackle some of the offseason storylines and other random thoughts on our minds today in a game of Toss Up.

Toss Up - Which school will win more games in football this season - My old school or my new school?

Jeff: Your new school is going to go 5-2 at home and 2-3 on the road. Northwestern misses Ohio State but still has Penn State and Wisconsin at home with Purdue, Michigan State, Iowa and Illinois on the road. Northwestern is an improving program but I see them winning a few less games this year than last year. Your new school is just happy to go to a bowl. BC meanwhile should win 8 games this year.

Brian: Jeff, you have it all backwards. At the risk of instantly sounding like a homer (trust me, there is literally no Northwestern school spirit in the grad programs here so this isn't the case), Northwestern will win more games than BC this year. One team has a much easier schedule, plays in a weaker conference, and has a returning senior quarterback under center. The other team plays in a better conference, has a tougher schedule and has to play arguably the best program in the conference (Virginia Tech) as opposed to missing the best team in the Big Ten (Ohio State). Northwestern will breeze to a 4-0 record out of conference with wins over Towson, Eastern Michigan, at Syracuse, and Miami (OH). Then in conference, the Cats will beat Minnesota and Indiana at home and Purdue and Illinois on the road. They will likely lose to Penn State at home and Iowa and Michigan State on the road. I would chalk the home Wisconsin game up as a toss up. That gets Northwestern to 8-4 or 9-3 on the year.

While I am ever the BC optimist, I think there is just way too much offseason turmoil to overcome for the Eagles to get to 8 or 9 wins. I would be doing cartwheels if we get to 7-5 or 8-4, but I think that a 5-7 or 6-6 season is more in the cards for Boston College this season. Early prediction for wins? Let's say Northeastern, Kent State, Wake Forest, Central Michigan, at Virginia, at Maryland.

Also, Northwestern's HC Pat Fitzgerald just got a contract extension through 2015. The short-term future in Evanston looks bright. And I would never bet against a QB named Kafka.

Toss Up - How do you like your BC vs. BU hockey games? Inside or outside?

Brian: I like the outdoors game as a novelty game to be held once every few years. But if this becomes a yearly event, I'm not too sold on that idea. I will say that I love the idea of an outdoor game for this season - since we've been calling for this for some time - but remember this likely would be a league game and would count in the final Hockey East standings. What would be cooler in my opinion is to have one of the Beanpot tournaments held outdoors since those games don't count towards the regular season Hockey East crown. Either that, or have the City of Boston host a winter tournament outdoors.

Jeff: Outside for sure. It looks like we are getting something that we wanted. BC is going to play at Fenway Park. The truly sad thing would be though is that now we are going to play this marquee hockey game maybe the football team will make a major bowl and Eagles have a conflict of interest and attendance at both the bowl and the hockey game are hurt as a result. You would consider making the trip to Fenway, right?

Brian: Of course.

Toss Up - 2009 Notre Dame Football - BCS bowl bound or Not?

Brian: Not this year for the Irish. Dr. Saturday nicely lays out the case for the Irish's BCS hopes, and I tend to agree with him. I see the Irish going 8-4 or 9-3 this year and missing out on a BCS at-large berth. With the schedule being as light as it is this year, I don't believe 9-3 gets them in. Quick glance at the schedule makes me think the Irish have 5 automatic wins (Nevada, at Michigan, at Purdue, Washington, Washington State), 2 sure losses (USC and Michigan State) and 5 toss up games, including the Eagles matchup with the Irish. Don't sleep on an improving Stanford team, who nearly knocked off the Irish in South Bend last season. I can see the Irish adding 3 more wins to the regular season win total from a season ago, but +4 in the win column will be too much for Irish fans to ask. The Irish will play in a very good bowl - perhaps the Gator Bowl - but will fall short of the BCS this season.

Jeff: Very very sadly, I have to say right now that ND is going to a BCS bowl this year. ND has such a weak schedule that they could lose to BC and USC and still go to a BCS game. BC has beaten the Irish before in years that they have gone to a BCS bowl. If ND beats BC this year I would say almost with certainty that they will be playing in a BCS Bowl and if BC beats Notre Dame, there is still a decent chance that they go on to a BCS Bowl.

Toss Up - Which do you prefer - Playing rivalry games or cupcakes after bye weeks?

Jeff: I hate BC's schedule as far as where the bye weeks fall this year. We know that we open with Northeastern which is probably a good thing considering the uncertainties that have developed with this team. Then our bye week falls after the Central Michigan game (on October 31) and before the Eagles' trip to Charlottesville. Central Michigan is not a bad team but it is still a game we should win and it is a meaningless out of conference game. Then Virginia is possibly the weakest ACC team we play and they are also a Coastal opponent which is far less important than an Atlantic Division game. I would much prefer at least one of our bye weeks lead up to the Florida State, Clemson, Notre Dame or the Virginia Tech games.

Brian: I'm not going to get too worked up about where the bye week falls this season as the college football season only has one bye week for most teams (12 games in a 13 week period). Northwestern doesn't even have the benefit of a bye week this season as they play their 12 regular season games in 12 weeks and end before Thanksgiving.

Going back to 2006, the Eagles have won every game while coming off the bye week. (In 2005, we lost to a nationally ranked Virginia Tech team on a Thursday night after having the previous Saturday off.) I would expect that trend to continue this season with a win at Virginia. If forced to pick though, I would say that I'd rather play a lesser opponent after a bye week rather than a rival or a strong opponent. The Eagles always seem to get up to play teams like Virginia Tech or Notre Dame, and the luxury of having a week off before playing these teams can I think be to the detriment of the team. The team starts to overthink the matchup, etc. In my opinion, I'm happy playing lesser opponents after the bye week instead of a strong opponent.

Last one, Toss Up - Will Rice get drafted tonight?

Brian: Yes. He'll be a mid-to-late second rounder. Even though the draft is heavy on point guard talent this season, Rice is a good enough pure shooter than he will get drafted tonight. The only mark against him is that it's unclear what position he'll play in the pros since he is a bit undersized as a shooting guard. Still, I think a team will take a chance on Rice.

Jeff: I am sticking by my prediction that he will not be drafted but I am hoping that he will or if he goes undrafted that he will be picked up by an NBA team.

Headlines: Catching Up on Hockey East

Brian: Back from my west coast weekend, a land devoid of college hockey. Speaking of college hockey, where was this all season? The Eagles swept the New Hampshire Wildcats right out of the Whittemore Center, 5-3 and 1-0, to advance to the Hockey East semifinals. The Eagles will face - guess who? - Boston University at 8pm Friday night at the TD Banknorth Garden.

The Hockey East semifinal schedule is now set, after top-seeded Boston University was pushed to 3 games by Maine. The (2) seed - Northeastern - was also pushed to three games and needed OT to get past Massachusetts. The (5) seed Lowell made quick work of Vermont to advance to the semis, the one series we predicted incorrectly.

(2) Northeastern vs. (5) UMass-Lowell - 5:00pm Friday
(1) Boston University vs. (6) Boston College - 8:00pm Friday

Here is the Hockey East tournament semifinal bracket.

So You're Saying There's a Chance? Collegehockeynews.com has once again produced their "You Are The Committee" feature this season, where you can predict the remaining college hockey playoff games and see how those games impact the final PairWise rankings. Unlike college basketball, the NCAA men's ice hockey selection committee uses the PWR rankings almost exclusively to determine the field of 16 Tournament teams.

If the Eagles don't win the Hockey East tournament (failing to receive the conference's autobid), they would presumably have to finish in the Top 14 of the PairWise rankings to make the NCAA tournament field. CHA champion Bemidji State and Atlantic Hockey champ Air Force will likely finish below the Top 16 in the final PWR rankings, but are in the field of 16 care of their conference's auto bid.

The good news? The Eagles moved up the PWR ever so slightly this past weekend and are currently ranked 17th in the PWR rankings. And two of the teams above BC - Miami (OH) and Ohio State - were eliminated from the CCHA conference tournament this past weekend. So BC has the benefit of playing an extra 1-2 games while Miami (OH) and Ohio State have to sit home and wait.

The bad news? I can only come up with one scenario to get the Eagles into the Top 13 of the PairWise rankings after predicting the rest of the conference tournament results. The best I can do is get the Eagles tied for 13th with Atlantic Hockey champion Air Force using the following pairings:
  • Hockey East Semifinal #2: Northeastern defeats Mass.-Lowell.
  • Hockey East Semifinal #1: Boston College defeats Boston University.
  • Hockey East Championship game: Northeastern defeats Boston College.
  • ECAC Semifinal #2: Cornell defeats Princeton.
  • ECAC Semifinal #1: Yale defeats St. Lawrence.
  • ECAC Championship game: Yale defeats Cornell.
  • ECAC Consolation game: Princeton and St. Lawrence tie.
  • Atlantic Hockey Semifinal #2: RIT defeats Mercyhurst.
  • Atlantic Hockey Semifinal #1: Air Force defeats Bentley.
  • Atlantic Hockey Championship game: Air Force defeats RIT.
  • CCHA Semifinal #2: Michigan defeats Alaska.
  • CCHA Semifinal #1: Notre Dame defeats Northern Michigan.
  • CCHA Championship game: Notre Dame defeats Michigan.
  • CCHA Consolation game: Alaska defeats Northern Michigan.
  • WCHA Play-in #1: Minnesota defeats Minnesota-Duluth.
  • WCHA Semifinal #2: Denver defeats Wisconsin.
  • WCHA Semifinal #1: North Dakota defeats Minnesota.
  • WCHA Championship game: North Dakota defeats Denver.
  • WCHA Consolation game: Wisconsin defeats Minnesota.
That is a lot of games that have to break the Eagles way for BC to have a chance of getting in. It is a slim chance, and the Eagles would likely be one of the last at-larges selected, but I'm saying there's a chance. If you can get the Eagles closer using CHN's "You Are The Committee" feature, leave your pairings in the comments section below.

Finally, congratulations to the women's ice hockey team on a successful 2008-2009 season. The women's team' season ended in Minnesota over the weekend, as the Eagles fell to the No. 2 seeded Minnesota Gophers 4-3. No shame in losing to Minnesota, who have won 2 women's National Championships, and are one of only three teams to win the title (Minnesota-Duluth and Wisconsin). This year's women's Frozen Four will take place on Friday and Sunday at BU's Agganis Arena. The usual suspects include Minnesota-Duluth facing off against (1) Wisconsin, and (2) Minnesota playing (3) Mercyhurst in the second semifinal.

Weekly Hockey Primer: Lowell, BU Next

Catching up on some hockey news ...

1/9/2009 - BC 3, Vermont 3 (OT) – 9-5-3, 5-4-3 Hockey East
1/10/2009 – BC 2, Vermont 4 – 9-6-3, 5-5-3 Hockey East

Yikes. Probably not the 2009 opening the Eagles would have liked. On Friday, Vermont’s Brian Roloff scored with 0:01 left on the clock in the third period to give Vermont a point.

"There are good ties and bad ties," Vermont head coach Kevin Sneddon said. "Usually when you're the team that scores the last goal to make it a tie, it's a good tie."

In this case, for the Eagles, this was certainly a bad tie.

Kucharski lit the lamp twice and frosh Cam Atkinson scored on a power play late in the second period.

On Saturday, while watching the BC-Miami basketball game on ESPNU, the Eagles hockey score kept flashing across the Bottom Line. I saw the score at 2-0 Eagles for the entire first half and thought we’d finally get a much needed 2 points on Saturday night. And then, out of nowhere, Vermont decided to start playing in the second and third periods, scoring 4 unanswered goals on 21 shots.

Is the Sky Falling? 5-5-3 in Hockey East?? Possibly. Muse is slumping, Hobey hopeful Brock Bradford has 1 point in the Eagles last 3 games, and the Eagles are now 8 points ... 8! ... behind first place Northeastern.

I think Eagles fans are nervously waiting for the patented York second-half surge to start soon! The talent is certainly there. Although it seems like the rest of Hockey East has certainly closed the gap on the Eagles.

Northeastern is 10-2-1 in Hockey East play, Vermont has looked impressive behind the play of two Hobey hopefuls (Stalberg and Lenes), Boston University has improved, New Hampshire again looks solid, and even Providence has started off 2009 with a bang. The Friars – having gone winless in Hockey East entering the New Year – replaced their starting goaltender with Alex Beaudry and have since knocked off Lowell and Boston University. With a bad break in the schedule, B.C. didn’t face Providence in 2008 and has three games left with the Friars.

Next Up. Two games against Hockey East foe. The first going down tonight at Conte Forum against UMass-Lowell. A Lowell weekend preview can be found over at The River Hawk hockey blog.

"A loss to Boston College would be understandable and not unexpected, regardless of their so-so performance last weekend at Vermont. Certainly, the Eagles offense is explosive and well-constructed. Their breakout in the Friday game against Vermont was particularly impressive and obviously if Lowell has gotten itself into the habit of giving up four to teams like Providence, then Brock Bradford and Co. could dissect Lowell on the counterattack as the Friars more or less did (which is embarrassing to the nth degree)."

On Saturday, the Eagles travel down the Green Line to wrap up the Hockey East regular season series with Boston University. BU is coming off a loss to Providence that snapped an 8 game winning streak (7-0-1). BU faces Merrimack tonight. The Eagles really need 2 points from their game with BU as the Eagles are 0-1-1 against BU on the season.

A full Hockey East weekend preview can be found on USCHO.com. Their weekend predictions?

Boston College 3, Lowell 1
Boston University 3, Boston College 2 (OT)

Bracketology, Hockey Style. Could there really be 6 teams from Hockey East in this year’s tournament? I say highly doubtful. Of the six teams from Hockey East currently in the Top 16 PairWise rankings, Maine’s resume looks the least impressive (tied-14). They haven’t beaten many impressive teams (other than BC) and haven’t won a game since before the break, sweeping Union at home on December 12-13.

Having said that though, the Eagles aren’t in the best of positions either at this point. Obviously this will change between now and March, but the Eagles would currently be a 3 seed and face a strong #2 seed in Michigan.
