ACC Power Rankings: Preseason

Part of BCI's season preview week.

For the second straight season, we will publish our ACC power rankings weekly. Before a down of football has been played, here's how we think the ACC programs stack up against one another. As always, critique and berate in the comment section below.

Preseason
  1. Virginia Tech
  2. Florida State
  3. Georgia Tech
  4. Miami (Fla.)
  5. Clemson
  6. North Carolina State
  7. North Carolina
  8. Boston College
  9. Wake Forest
  10. Maryland
  11. Duke
  12. Virginia

Notes
  • Oddly, the champs didn’t end the season as our #1 but do start the season as our preseason #1. Although I have some doubts, until someone serves the Hokies notice ...
  • Most college football pundits are higher on North Carolina than we are, while we might have Miami Fla. higher than they'll finish

This Week

Games that matter - South Carolina at North Carolina State (today!, ESPN) ... Baylor at Wake Forest ... Alabama at Virginia Tech (ABC) ... Maryland at California (ESPN2) ... Miami (Fla.) at Florida State (Monday, ESPN)

Glorified exhibitions - Jacksonville State at Georgia Tech ... Northeastern at Boston College ... Citadel at North Carolina ... Middle Tennessee State at Clemson ... William & Mary at Virginia ... Richmond at Duke

I know it's only one game, but NC State looks pretty freakin' awful last night.

There should never be a reason to write "Miami (Fla)"

They're Miami. Only the Ohio school should need to identify the location, but do it 100% of the time.

It's like going to college at Notre Dame of Manchester, New Hampshire -- they need to identify the Manch-Vegas part.

Erik, I disagree.

Miami University
Oxford, Ohio
established 1809

University of Miami
Coral Gables, Florida
established 1925

We have Miami U and the U of Miami. In the case of one-word simplification, the U of Miami gets the parenthetical addition.

Miami (FL)

I'm with Erik.

DA U is in Miami. Miami U is in...random nowhere Ohio?

It doesn't matter, if you're talking about football or felonies committed, everyone knows which Miami you're talking about.

Recently, Miami Fla. and Notre Dame (IN) haven't earned the right to be mentioned sans geographic qualifiers.

Admittedly, I do laugh saying the words "Notre Dame of Indiana"

Dear Erik and BCMike,

This is why we here at BCI take extra care in annotating Miami as Miami (Fla.). We'll be extra careful when writing Florida State going forward, too.

Love,
BCI
